The K Desktop Environment

Step 1 - Downloading the KDE documentation tools

Introduction

To get a complete set of docbook tools installed, you must download two different sets of files:

The basic DocBook tools

You can download the KDE distribution of the basic DocBook tools from: ftp://ftp.kde.org/pub/kde/devel/docbook/RPMS

(Because this server is quite busy, you might want to use the list of mirrors found at: http://www.kde.org/mirrors.html.)

You will find RPM packages already compiled for your processor (in the subdirectory "i386" or "ppc"), and other packages that do not depend on a specific architecture (in the subdirectory "noarch").

You will need to download at least these packages:

You may also want another (optional) package:

All those packages are RPM format; this does not prevent you from installing them on a Debian distribution, as explained in next step.

The KDE customization

The second part of your download contains the up to date customizations that KDE places on the standard docbook tools.

The KDE-specific stuff is located in the directory ksgmltools/ of the kdelibs package.

The kdelibs package can be found at: ftp://ftp.kde.org/pub/kde/unstable/CVS/snapshots/current

(or, again, if too busy, on one of its mirrors.)

Your distribution probably already has the kdelibs package, but it's likely that the binary script named "kdb2html" it includes does not know about the location of the DocBook-tools catalogs (since the basic DocBook tools were probably not installed at the time kdelibs was compiled). This explains why you probably have to recompile and reinstall the kdelibs.

The next step

You have now downloaded everything you need to install the docbook tools.

Now you are ready to install the tools. Determine which type of system you have (if you are in doubt, try RedHat-like first), and choose the appropriate link below.
